Hey, SP. - >Implying - 2010-04-07

I'm going to be honest with you tonight. I avoid anime. I look at anime fans today and see half of them obsess over some female character, which I can understand, because some characters are honestly cute looking (as they were made to be), but I just can't get over the kawaii weaboo moes[Image: lol.htm]hit that I see all of the time. I've seen too many men transform into slippery vaginas with body pillows and wall scrolls, and it sends me into a depressed state. I guess that's just part of why I avoid it. Maybe I'm just afraid of being a part of the stereotype. I don't know.

The only anime I've ever watched is Cowboy Bebop. Since its first airing on Adult Swim, I've watched the series maybe six times, though probably more. I absolutely love it. I'm sure that many of you think its overrated, and maybe it is, but I really just love it. It's great. Over the years I've convinced myself that no other animated series can bring tears to my eyes the way Bebop did during its final episode, and that's only another of the many reasons I haven't given any other anime a chance. I gave Fullmetal Alchemist a try back when it first started airing and it was okay, I guess. I never made it up to the ending because I got bored, and then I heard the ending was shi[Image: lol.htm]tty so I decided to stop keeping up with it.

I really need your help, SP. I don't know where to start, or where to look to find out where to start, so I came here. I thought about asking /a/ but they're a bunch of pricks when it comes to asking for suggestions and help. You guys are better than them; I'm sure of it. You're my everything, right now. I don't watch TV and I watch only a couple of movies every month. I want to enjoy anime like everybody else on the internet. Btw, no moeblob watchers allowed. I know what some of you like.

Please help me.

Texhnolyze
Paranoia Agent
Serial Experiments Lain
Boogiepop Phantom
Time of Eve

Mature anime for mature anime viewers such as ourselves.

 Spoiler

You could also check out Outlaw Star, if you want. It has a lot of Cowboy Bebop elements. It's like Cowboy Bebop Lite, with a worse ending (but it's hard to match Bebop's ending, anyway).

Gurren Lagann.

Manliest animu of Manly Power

Black Lagoon
Samurai Champloo
Trigun
Wolf's Rain
Ga-Rei -Zero-

Hey, SP. - Yotsuba - 2010-04-07

Seconding everything posted in this thread. Maybe not Gurren Lagann. It's good, but I don't know if it's for you. I definitely recommend you give it a shot; but if you're just getting into anime with your mindset, it would probably be better to try it out later, when you've gotten past the stereotypes you have associated with anime.

Monster - It's a long series though, just letting you know. I think it's worth it though, and it certainly doesn't have anything in it whatsoever that you said you hate about anime. Hell, the thing takes place in GERMANY. It starts off seeming like it'll be some show about a Doctor saving lives, but then completely switches that mindset around the 3rd episode. Not spoiling anything from there.

Mononoke - Not really action. Give it a shot. It's more akin to Lain and Paranoia Agent, but it doesn't have mind fucks. It's one of my favorite series. Not sure if you'd be interested in it, but try it out. The synopsis on that page doesn't tell you much, but I actually find it a little hard to explain myself.

Darker Than Black

Obviously, feel free look up any other title listed in this thread on ANN for a synopsis to see if they interest you.

Edit - Planetes might interest you as well.

Edit 2 - Don't confuse Mononoke with the popular Miyazaki movie, Princess Mononoke. They're entirely different, and people usually think I'm shortening Princess Mononoke when I bring it up.

Don't know anything to suggest to you Greg, but I wish you the best of luck in this venture.

Thanks! After doing a quick ANN search on each of them, almost all of them seem like psychological thrillers which are always nice. I've heard about Outlaw Star and looked into it a while back, but it never really got my attention. I'll think of giving it a try after going through what you recommended.

I've heard of Black Lagoon and just from reading the plot summary it sounds like something I might like. I'll definitely give it a chance. Trigun is another one of those "MAYBE IT'LL BE LIKE BEBOP" animes that I considered a while back but never got around to, so maybe I'll give that a shot too. Samurai Champloo sounds familiar and after looking it up I realized it was another that I tried watching on Adult Swim and didn't like. Wolf's Rain looks dumb. Thanks for the help though. Definitely going to try Black Lagoon.

Monster looks like something I might like, as does Plantenes. Mononoke looks weird but since you and ANN can't tell me anything about it, I'm kind of interested. Definitely gonna look in to a few of these, thanks bro!

Do you remember any other series you thought you'd try but didn't work for you?

Opinions on this anime? If you've seen it, what did you think of it? The plot sounds terribly kawaii and it has looks to match, but omg... so cyuute...

Yotsuba Wrote:Do you remember any other series you thought you'd try but didn't work for you?
I think Trigun and Outlaw Star are the only two that I had considered because they seemed like the closest things to Bebop. I also tried getting in to Ghost in the Shell back when Adult Swim was airing it, but I was too young to understand it, and starting off in the middle of the series didn't really help. Is that any good?

Hey, SP. - TøbiasBlack - 2010-04-08

thirding Samurai Champloo.
and really, i dont watch much anime myself. i enjoy it, but id rather read manga instead. most of the time the anime is suck compared to it, and IMO anime is overrated.

If you enjoy mind fuc'ks: Betterman.
Comedy: Excel Saga. its a parody of so many things... soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo many things.

GITS is a pretty good series. ive only ever seen the "Stand Alone Complex" arcs, never the movies, but thats mainly due to none of the stores near me selling the movies.

Ecchi, comedy, romance (sorta), supernatural, somewhat 'Slice of Life', etc

I always read up on shows before I watch them. That what I use. You get reviews from multiple people for one anime most of the time there.

Crunchyroll has reviews too but less thorough.

It's Mikan. Manga/anime are trash. Do not even consider wasting your time. Just fap to Mikan doujins or something. Much better.

Yes. All of Ghost in the Shell is excellent. Definitely worth watching. Another top-tier.

Looked into it more and yeah, it does look pretty bad. Gonna have to make a folder for this Mikan chick, though.

You'd like Black Lagoon I bet.
Also:
Eden of the East
Mushishi (Show is so chill. In such a good way.)

Maybe Baccano? Maybe? Someone else chime in on this.

Here I go with another raging hard-on for GitS: Ghost in the Shell SAC 1st and 2nd season are god-tier. I think its sci-fi elements outdo those of Bebop. But we all know what makes Bebop pineappleing amazing goes way beyond what makes it sci-fi.

Hey, SP. - Yotsuba - 2010-04-08

Yes, also backing up Ghost in the Shell. I'd assumed you had watched it already and didn't enjoy it, so didn't bring it up.

Also, I felt like mentioning that just because Mononoke is a spinoff of the final arc of Ayakashi, doesn't mean you need to see Ayakashi for it. The series itself is separated into arcs that don't necessarily connect to each other. There's slight references to arcs, but nothing that wouldl remove the experience. I ended up seeing the Ayakashi arc after Mononoke.

Hey, SP. - Super_cyp - 2010-04-08

Dragonball Z <3

Wolf's Rain

I liked the FMA ending :f6:

Rurouni Kenshin.

D. Gray Man

Uh Bleach? I haven't seen the anime of that though.

Death Note

I also enjoyed Samurai Champloo.. the little bit I saw of it..

My Bf recommends alot of anime, but alot of them seem to be perverted, and I'm just not into it. Ouran High School Host Club and Fruits Basket were great.. but it seems to be hard to find a good comedic anime that isn't about boobs, and touchy feely crap @__@

I'm recommending what I think isn't too girly xD though I'll probably fail..Frown
