I personally disagree with any word being "forbidden." It's stupid. Saying "you're not allowed" only encourages it. I hate the idea that any word is outlawed because the meaning isn't polite, with exception (maybe) to racial slurs.

If it's not used as an insult against someone, I find it okay.
Although I do get annoyed if someone is speaking and they use it in about every sentence.

I don't really curse unless I really need to express someone else's feelings, or my feelings extremely strongly. There are much more effective ways to express something than to just curse.

It is bad to use that language at a loud volume in a school, however I think the teacher handled it terribly. Instead of saying what she said, why didn't she just say "That language isn't appropriate here" or something like that? I remember a few times teachers pulled kids up for stuff like that at school, but they never carried on like that o_o

This is very true. Just like when you tell kids not to drink/smoke, they go out and do it to become COOOOOOOL. They are doing something they've been told (for almost their whole lives) they shouldn't do.

...and as for your friend, if I were him, I would probably have slapped the teacher in the face and said. "No. My parents are not failures. Don't you dare ever say that again. You'd better take that back, because what you just said was a false accusation them which is very disrespectful. Apologize. Right now. *srs face*" But then again, I live outside of Singapore, so

I had a friend who was born in Singapore that moved here to the States, she said most can be pretty harsh. I guess this would be a good example

Meaning has nothing to do with it. I have a book that talks about swearing in a chapter. I'll have to read it and get back to this thread...

I think that the fact that people consider the words bad just makes it bad. the words have a negative connotation. If we were to make something like Horsey a racial slur or something that was widely used as an insult, would that then be considered a forbidden word too?

I think when somebody says a swear word in a language you are proficient in, it doesn't seem like such a big deal. However, if you are an immigrant (for example) and somebody says a swear word it might have more effect... or maybe it's the opposite...who knows?
Overall, I don't really mind if somebody swears but there's always a time and place for you to just keep your mouth shut :x... most people should have the common sense for that...

Seconded. I usually was severely punished as a kid if I cursed at all. As a result, I don't curse anymore, at all.

In fajar sec, it depends on the teacher really. most teachers here dont mind if you say 'damn' or pomegranate'. You can say in hokkien/cantonese/malay here without the teachers knowing.

I do swear in general conversation in 1/75ish sentences with my friends. 1/50 in online conversations. But they've pretty much lost all negative connotation to my friends and I.
Pretty much all of my teachers will give you a bunch of warnings before sending you to the office, because they're so commonly used. Only my english teacher will send you to the office pretty much immediately, because she's just really strict.

Swearing after every sentence is rather awkward and usually just done by kids who either don't have respect for others, or just do it to be "cool."
