Apparently you can select difficulty modes for Balrog Lord. Yes, I do know that Roads was talking about it.

But it's a damn interesting concept that they added difficulty to bosses, even if it's only for Balrog Lord. I still question what is exactly different with each mode and you progress in them, and I do also wonder if they would, in fact, add them to existing bosses... (Papulatus, Zakum, Horntail, etc...) if that is possible to begin with. Only time will tell.

So far there is four, but only one is active:

Easy
Normal
Hard
Hell

Comments?

Difficulty probably affects exp, droprate, etc, as well as monster HP, summons, skills, etc. Maybe he drops different items as well. Either way, I'd solo him on Hell if I had to to get my PA.

Wow um, this seems a bit uninformed. Easy version doesn't imply that level 50 noobs will be able to get a monster cover for their book. Heck the HT we have now MIGHT be the easy version, you never know what can happen. You should be a bit more careful about the assumptions you make from the lack of data regarding this. Otherwise you just make yourself look like one of those level 50 noobs.

They could also increase or decrease the time limit.

If you don't know what it is how do you know it's not needed?

didn't they have a similar thing with ppq. the normal, rage , and enrage boss mode? i think its a some what new concept that could make the game more fun and make it more complex. when doing it the rewards may be worth it if you we're to kill it on a harder level then on the beginning level. then again we just don't know so it may not be that way . {side note} people don't do the extra effort for the special modes in ppq so it may be the same for the Boss ....

Funny I just heard that WoW implented a patch with also some sorta "select difficulty" for bosses/instances.

Im not really into WoW so I dont know exactly, but I believe the idea is that the more casual gamer who just wants to kill/having fun with a group/other reason, can now fight a boss and are done within an hour. While the hardcore gamer who are willingly to fight a boss for a couple of hours can also fight that boss without complaining how easy it is (ht/zak these days in ms) Obviously the difficulty setting determine the rate of rare equipments/exp.

IMO it's a nice idea if they work it out properly.

What I dislike about this 'difficulty' setting is that you can only set it on bosses. ;/ In other MMOs, there were already difficulty-settings. I'll use Phantasy Star Online as an example, as soon as you start the game (on offline mode), you have to beat the beat in this order:

Normal -> Hard -> Very Hard -> Ultimate

There were 4 major bosses, in 4 major dungeons, and you had to kill them in order as well, after killing the final boss, you unlocked ____ mode. However, online-play was different, as soon as you go online, you can 'choose' the difficulty-setting whenever you're about to 'grind' or go boss-hunting. In that case, all monsters will have reduced EXP, reduced HP, reduced def, reduced att, and so on and so forth, as well as different drops.

On the hardest mode possible, the bosses appearances differs from all 3 other modes, as well as all monsters from every dungeon (and I'm not talking about a re-color here, unlike Nexon), and the drops were spiked massively. IMO, from Normal -> Hard -> Very Hard, the monsters only seemed slightly harder. On Ultimate, they could easily 1-2 HKO you, which in other modes, they couldn't do.

My point being, if Nexon did something like that to changed monster-drops + EXP, I would love to see that. This way, we could see how other players would react to it and start using their skills more than using their 'z0mb U83r 1337-DMG F555'.

That is the only innovative idea, genius. Unless you're expecting Nexon or [insert some other company here] to re-model every map dungeon, monsters (appearances completely), stats, and all drops HAS to be changed, including items, etc for every single difficulty, you're kinda crazy, seriously. Can you imagine how much time that would take for an MMO that has multiple huge continents?

Maple Story does have multiple continents and is constantly growing... without continuously recycling content. I agree with Dusk, that sounds lazy rather than innovative. Having multiple boss difficulties allows players who wish to be challenged to do so without affecting the casual player's experience in any way.

Also I would like to note that Phantasy Star Online was the most boring video game I've ever played. Ever.

Using PSO as a comparision to maplestory is stupid. For one thing, the game wasn't ever really receiving updates bar the odd quest and for another the *difficulty* setting was only there to artifically extend the life of the game past one playthrough.

Me like difficulty setting on bosses.

By skill Nexon would mean "HP Washing required".

And damage should also play a part, as harder modes should require you to be able to acquire rare but powerful items that help you kill faster. Now if only more weapons were able to level up through not just monster kills or hit usage or combo usage, or attempting to be able to use your skills and or ability to dodge hits. IMO powerful weapons should be earned through expert game play instead of playing market and hoping to get lucky. >.>

The problem there is in Maple everyone's gameplay intersects with everyone elses.

You can't give a mob 10 hp for one person and 10,000 for another and have them both fight it at the same time.

The best you could do is give "easy" players a massive damage boost over "hard" players and that would severely jack up the only way Mapler's have to judge themselves compared to other players.

If "easy" players got drops more easily, or mesos more easily, or had cheaper prices, or any other advantages to make them easier, they'd quickly become farming accounts for "hard" players. taken to the other extreme, if the only way to get any of the really good things were on hard mode, "easy" players would miss out on so much content they'd never be satisfied. "No zhelm for you, you're an easy player."

Difficulty settings just do not translate well into an MMO with a shared reality unless you start segregating people into difficulty level setting based servers or similar where the modes can't mix.

It works on bosses because everyone who enters has to agree on it and is conformed to the same rules. For general game play though, it just fails.

Let the hit points remain the same, then, and just increase the defense, atk, etc..

I suppose the bad part about Maplestory is that there's only one way to play it as far as leveling up goes. You do it right or the character fails. I wish it didn't have to be that way.

Personally, I think I'd like to see a hardcore mode. You die, and your character is deleted. Try playing that with Aran and see how long you survive. Or try playing hardcore with Aran in JMS, the high damage version of maplestory, and see how long you last!

Select difficulty...? - MaplePorn - 2009-05-20

A more apt comparison would be with the difficulty setting in The World Ends With You, where increasing the difficulty level would result in better loot at the cost of stronger monsters, which falls in line with MasPan's line of thinking.

(Also, PSO Defense Force go! It's kind of difficult to add completely new content on a pre-direct download-era game without releasing expansion disks, which they did with EP2 and 4)

Yeah let's make it Tibia.

Let's do it. Tibia. Maple tibia.

oh wait no tibia is an awful game.

*gets killed by a rotworm and is sent back 40 levels, loses all of their equipment, is now to low a level to survive a single hit in the area they died, is helpless to watch as random PKer58505446 walks out with all of their stuff and is now walking over to kill them... again. Is sent back to level 1 with nothing on the main land where there are no weak monsters effectively ruining the entire game*
